Joe's New Blog

Nothing special, this is just my third effort at writing a blog about my life and what goes on in it: Hobbies, cooking, work, maybe the occasional book or DVD review, and so forth. Nothing really noteworthy, but this is sort of a little subset of my world...

Good intentions...

Back when I had my old job, in Oregon, I worked with a lady named Wendy. She was one of those outgoing, funny sorts of gals. She was often trying to lose weight, and she and her husband would buy lots of vegetables and fruits and such. One day, she was talking to me and some other folks about cleaning out all of the fruits and veggies which had gone bad before they could use them. She referred to the crisper drawer in her fridge as the "drawer of good intentions."

I've occasionally used that phrase about the same thing, but as I look around, I realize that I pretty much have a whole life of good intentions. A few minutes ago, I was reorganizing part of the book shelf in the living room, making room for some records and such that moved from somewhere else. And I noticed that I have two full shelves and then some of cookbooks. And I have a full shelf of music books. A couple of math books, and a couple on photography. And an entire book case full of computer programming books.

Most of those books have never been used, and I don't know that a lot of them ever will be. I bought them because I thought that, one of these days, I'll read through and learn about statistics, to apply that to my "real job." I'll try a bunch of those recipes. And I'll learn some of those songs that I love to listen to, and polish up my music theory. Of course, I haven't done many of those things, but I still have the shelves full of books. The cabinet full of baking supplies, for when I start making more cookies. The shelf full of modeling supplies, for when I start working on that model train layout.

I need to quit working on the intention and start working on the doing...
